Default Siyabulela

Camagu, Nomnganga
ndiyabulela phezulu
(I am grateful big time)
I am most grateful for your enthusiasm. Although I could not understand your entire insert above, I have whisked it off for translation. It would be awesome for the Xhosa learners, if you were to provide an English translation with your insert to help people learn, and for more people to hear your message.

Regarding stuff on the idioms of the AmaXhosa, I left a really cool sheet of idioms and proverbs related to plants and trees up in the Kei, but Patricia Schonstein Pinnock's book "Xhosa. A cultural Grammar" has a whole bunch of really great ones. I will try right up a few and put them in the culture forum. What's the xhosa words for them again. Amaqhalo nezi...ndilibele...I forget

Default Some examples of proverbs

Hi, I found these on the African Voices website.
XHOSA PROVERBS

(These are taken from) a book we recently bought called Xhosa Proverbs by Zolile Calana, published by Kwela Books.

Usana olungakhaliyo lufel' embelekweni.
A baby that does not cry out, dies on its mother's back.
(If you don't complain, nothing will happen and the problem will persist).

Akukho nkwali iphandel' enye.
No partridge scratches the ground in search of food for another.
(Do not expect others to do for you what you should do for yourself.)

Inkqayi ingena ngenlontlo.
The baldness of a head begins at the temples.
(A big thing may result from a seemingly small matter. This is said in defence of small beginnings. Equivalent to "The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.")

Kanivele mawaba sikhe sihambise levangeli

I asked a venerable friend to attempt a translation of Momnganga's piece above, and this was what he sent me.

"men of our lords, and you, women of our home... our ancestors... men of Togu, of Phalo, of Hintsa, of Malangana... men of Mdange, of Tshiwo, of Rharhabe, and Gcaleka, wow! I feel joy on seeing a sight like this... the person who brought forth this idea has annointed my head with oil.

I am a child who is proud of what he is... I am as the thunder... under the lights that burn day and night... in the land of gold... I say "here" to the man and woman who deny that they come from this earth, which springs grass... things do not go well for them when they say they are Xhosa...

WHOA!! This is hard, dude!!!

so sorry i can't finnish it cos i got a meeting, and i wont be near a computer for a while.
try asking a hard-core mbongi (poet) or a lecturer or teacher.

...So there you have it, folks....

Default Re: Zizwe Zika Ntu, kaTogu, kaPhalo!

Is this forum still active? I have posted a number of things but no replies. Am looking for Xhosa proverbs or idioms that have to do with the following;

Firewood also cooking and carrying
Women and their work
Women and men in the home

By the way, what are the Xhosa words for idioms, proverbs and sayings?

I hope to get lots of replies!
